A sports catalyst offers a much higher gas flow than a common ceramic one, due to the much lower cell density, 100 or 200 cells per square inch compared to 400-800 for the stock unit. At the same time, it retains some back pressure compared to the catless option. When you want to increase engine power, installing a sports catalyst is a good idea, since this improves the flow of gases during the exhaust stroke, thus reducing the discharge backpressure.
